DC's Young Humanitarians show their support

Last Thursday, young professionals in DC gathered at Hudson Restaurant & Lounge for the launching of Refugees International’s newest offset, the Young Humanitarian Circle. Initially, we were shooting for 30 guests but young humanitarians in DC showed us that a good cause coupled with an RI advocate reporting on a recent trip to the Congo, can reel in many interesting, compassionate, and involved individuals! At 7 pm, guests started filtering in and by the end of the night, there were about 150 people showing their enthusiasm for the new group within RI.

The Young Humanitarian circle was initiated to provide young professionals with an opportunity to join together to advocate for lifesaving assistance and protection for refugees. By participating in educational series, exclusive events and unique networking opportunities, this committed group of individuals will have a chance to participate in furthering RI’s mission.

After the crowd arrived, we started the program by introducing the new Young Humanitarian Circle and our featured speaker, Camilla Olson. Camilla spoke about her recent trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). While in the DRC, Camilla focused on the issue of sexual violence, a devastating reality in the Congo that is often underreported in the news. Camilla’s moving speech during the happy hour is an example of one way the YHC seeks to combine the sharing of insight into today’s most pressing humanitarian crises with an opportunity to socialize and network.

The Young Humanitarian Circle is looking forward to expanding the reach of the group and is planning more fun and engaging events for the future. If you are interested in joining and helping to shape the YHC, e-mail events@refintl.org with suggestions!
