On May 8, 2008 Refugees International hosted its 29th Anniversary Dinner at the picturesque Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC. More than 400 guests gathered to honor Mia Farrow and her son, Ronan Farrow, for their work on behalf of refugees in Darfur. Refugees International's President Ken Bacon presented Mia and Ronan with the McCall-Pierpaoli Humanitarian Award, which honors those who have shown extraordinary service to refugees and displaced people. Senator Edward Kennedy and Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon were also honored at the ceremony with RI’s first Congressional Leadership Award in support of their efforts for displaced Iraqis. The Congressional Leadership Award is presented to members of Congress who demonstrate leadership in pushing for legislation. Michael and Mariella Trager were co-chairs of the Dinner. His Excellency, the Ambassador of Italy, and Mrs. Giovanni Castellaneta were Honorary Patrons.
