After Years, Eastern DRC Still on Life Support

In March, RI advocates Peter Orr and Erin Weir visited the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic Congo to assess the effects of insecurity on civilians. Hundreds of thousands of people continue to be displaced by clashes between government forces and militias, as well as by direct attacks by armed groups. Even the Congolese military are guilty of preying on the population they are meant to protect. After two elections and millions of dollars in aid to the DRC, the underlying causes of conflict - and the threats to civilians - persist.
