Take Action! Tell President-Elect Obama to Support Iraqi Refugees
November 21, 2008 | Megan Fowler | Tagged as: Iraq, U.S. Administration, Neglected Crises
Nearly five million Iraqis have fled their homes due to violence in their country and are living in increasingly desperate circumstances. Regardless of how long U.S. forces stay in Iraq, failure to address the needs of displaced Iraqis will have dramatic impacts on security inside Iraq and throughout the Middle East.
Urge President-elect Obama to ensure a stable Iraq and comprehensively address the needs of displaced Iraqis. Refugees International's comprehensive plan, endorsed by 23 organizations, includes four concrete steps to resolve this crisis.
1) Increase funding for aid to Iraqi refugees in neighboring countries;
2) Allow Iraqi refugees to remain in exile until conditions in Iraq are safe enough for them to return home;
3) Pressure the Government of Iraq to meet the immediate and long-terms needs of displaced Iraqis inside the country; and
4) Increase the number of Iraqis resettled into the U.S.
