Last week, Refugees International and the International Rescue Committee were co-presenters of a documentary about Iraqi refugees at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in New York City.  The Unreturned is a powerful depiction of the lives of five Iraqis as they struggle to begin again in Syria and Jordan after fleeing violence in Iraq.

On an incredible evening at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC, Refugees International celebrated our 31st anniversary and our first-ever ‘green’ gala. Sam Waterston, our favorite emcee and newly-appointed vice-chair of our Board of Directors, welcomed over 500 guests who gathered to recognize humanitarians for the passion they have shown and the change they have achieved in tackling the world’s humanitarian needs.

As we’re so often reminded, the holiday season is a wonderful time of joy, happiness, and gratitude for the family, friends and loved ones in our lives.

It’s also a mad scramble.

No, no, I didn’t wait until the last minute to do my gift shopping (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it).  It’s a mad scramble because those of us in the non-profit world are looking at our bottom line and hoping we raise enough money to meet our budgets.  We prep, we plan, and then we downright beg and plead for every donation – from $50 to $10,000 – that allows us to keep our doors open and our work going.

And if you’re on our email list, you know that Refugees International ain’t too proud to beg.

With those words, Ted Turner accepted the McCall-Pierpaoli Humanitarian Award at Refugees International’s 30th Anniversary Gala at the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC.

I’ve spent the entire season of Celebrity Apprentice trying my hardest to stay away from the silly, groan-inducing poker analogies running through my head.  But come on.  After last night’s episode, it simply can’t be avoided any longer.

Refugees International is, thanks to our champion poker player and Celebrity Apprentice contestant Annie Duke, clearly holding pocket aces.  And we just got dealt another ace on the flop last night.  Everyone with me here?
