Refugees International is conducting a mission to Kenya from April 8 to April 16, 2008 to examine the situation of groups and individuals lacking effective nationality. As part of RI’s program on Stateless Initiatives, the mission will focus on the Nubian population, estimated to include about 100,000 individuals and which has lived in Kenya for nearly a century. RI aims to assess the effects of statelessness on Nubian groups in Nairobi and Eldama Ravine, including the extent to which the absence of citizenship has affected the population’s physical security and access to property, services, and legal protection. RI will also assess ongoing efforts to resolve the Nubians’ nationality status, including any progress made on cases filed in the Kenyan judicial system.
