South Sudan 2008: School Under a Tree

It is hard for children to get used to this type of “classroom” under a tree, especially after attending school inside proper buildings while living in exile. Such schooling conditions are difficult enough during the dry season, but become impossible during the rainy season. Refugees International spoke with communities who had received school teaching materials from the UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF. The materials had been ruined during the rainy season, because they had nowhere to protect them from the rains. In the background of the photo is a school building which was damaged during the war. If the community could get roofing materials, the school building could be rehabilitated.
