Pakistan 2001
12/27/2001
Maternal and child mortality in Afghanistan is one of the worst in the world. Estimates of maternal mortality rates range from 1700-2200/100,000. Although the figures are not as high in the case of refugees living in Pakistan, maternal and child mortality remains among the highest in the world. In addition to inadequate reproductive and maternal health care, traditional birth practices often discourage Afghan refugee women from seeking care in clinics. In several refugee areas, intensive reproductive health education has succeeded in women using available health services which has lowered rates of maternal mortality.
