This picture shows Sierra Leonean refugees in Liberia. UNHCR has the mandate to protect and assist Sierra Leonean refugees living within Liberia. Although there are not that many refugees (roughly 15,000), UNHCR provides services better than what the refugees believe will be waiting for them when they return to Sierra Leone. Thus, despite the danger of living in Liberia with the uncertainties that come with the post-conflict period, many refugees, particularly single women, would rather stay where they are because they can access education, counseling, and other services. The refugee children pictured here also have access to regular, free primary education unlike most Liberians.
