Rumbek was fought over in 1997 and 1998 by forces of the government of Sudan and the rebel Sudanese People’s Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA/M). The signs of war are everywhere. Most buildings in the town were destroyed, as were these buildings, and few have been rebuilt. Peace negotiations are now underway between the government and the SPLM. Most aid agencies working in southern Sudan are based in Rumbek, which is the de facto capital of the SPLM.
