India 2004: Hut in Simhui, Mizoram

06/01/2004

In the makeshift camp at Simhui, up to 10 people live in huts such as this one ever since they have been evicted from their homes. In February 2004, Simhui camp was attacked by the YMA. Approximately half of the 88 people in the camp fled to Delhi to seek asylum with UNHCR (which is not permitted entry into Mizoram by the Government of India), while the rest hid in the forest, and returned to the camp area after they thought it was safe to come out of hiding.

The people in the camp continue to receive threats from the YMA, but their fear of the SPDC outweighs their fear of the YMA. Thus, they intend to stay in this camp until the next YMA attack, when they will once again go into hiding in the forest until they think it is safe to return to the camp area.
