Sudan (south) 2004: Women Head to Market

11/16/2004

These women are carrying fruits and vegetables to a local market to sell. Several of these women fled to Khartoum to escape the civil war and resided in the shanty towns ringing the city. About 150,000 displaced persons have returned to the Nuba Mountains since the 2002 cease fire. They usually travel from Khartoum via a two-day bus ride during the dry season. The people who remained in the Nuba Mountains during the civil war often fled for safety from the valleys to the mountains. They are now slowly beginning to move back into the valleys and reclaim their former lands.
