UAE 2004: Construction and rapid growth

Thatcher Hullerman Cook
12/23/2004

The blend of traditional and modern elements distinguishes the UAE from other Gulf States. Islam and the heritage of a traditional, tribal society form the basis of a stable and essentially conservative social structure. Emirate rule is based on dynastic position and limits popular participation. Unlike much of the region, however, UAE is fairly liberal as other cultures and beliefs are generally tolerated. Media outlets generally enjoy freedom of speech.

Prior to the discovery of oil in the 1950s, UAE's economy depended on fishing and other sea extraction industries. Since the discovery, however, the oil and gas sector has transformed the tribal backwater into a world financial center. The UAE boasts one of the world’s highest standards of living. Its per capita income is comparable to Western Europe. In recent years the UAE has invested oil and gas profit into more sustainable industries, such as tourism, technology, and finance.
