The IDP settlement of Kafé is about 70 kilometers from Bunia, the headquarters of MONUC. Approximately 10,000 people live in Kafé in a narrow band of land between the mountains and Lake Albert. The roads to Kafé are in extreme disrepair and require driving through territory held by the PUSIC (the Party for Unity and Safeguarding of the Integrity of Congo), a partially disbanded splinter group of the Union of Congolese Patriots. In order to deliver goods to Kafé, humanitarian agencies are using boats to travel from Tchomia on Lake Albert. These boats are filled with non-food items -- including blankets, jerry cans, kitchen tools and soap donated by UNICEF -- and are being delivered by CESVI to Kafé.
