An Afghan Mother Returns Home

06/06/2004

Forced from their homes, Afghan refugees fled to Iran and Pakistan in order to escape civil war and the rule of the Taliban. In 2002, millions of refugees began to return home; RI traveled to Afghanistan in 2004 to assess the living conditions of these returnees. This mother works the fields located north of Bamyan accompanied by her daughter. Her daily chores include walking several miles each day to obtain fresh water, as there is no nearby well. RI is advocating for increased access to safe drinking water to ensure that displaced women and children have better health and sanitation.
