A Sudanese Mother in Chad

03/26/2005

Salwa is a refugee from Darfur living in eastern Chad. Salwa is one of the approximately 210,000 refugees who fled the Janjaweed attacks and sought safety in Chad, one of the poorest countries in Africa. Salwa’s thirty-year-old son Malmoud suffers from severe mental health problems as a result of the violence in Darfur. Malmoud often awakes in the middle of the night, screaming in terror as he relives the bombs falling like sheets of rain. For Malmoud and Salwa, their escape to Chad has not erased the horrendous events from their lives. RI continues to advocate for increased services for refugees in Chad and for the U.S. to increase pressure on the Government of Sudan to stop the ongoing attacks against civilians.
