Liberia 2005: Muddy Roads

One of the main obstacles for refugee and IDP return in Liberia, as well as general development, is the catastrophic state of the roads. This photo, of the road between Voinjama and Foya, was taken at the beginning of the rainy season in May. Because of the mud, it has been impossible for large trucks to safely pass.

Little has been done on a national level to improve roads; on the local level, however, in Lofa county, UNHCR, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Pakistani Battalion of UNMIL have been working together to improve the roads. Much of this work is only superficial clearing in order to allow the roads to be somewhat passable; considerable investment will need to be made to permanently improve the roads.
