Particularly vulnerable in most post-conflict settings are the widows. Land is a big issue in northern Uganda where it is passed down from the father to the son. Women may inherit the land but only if they have stayed on it after the death of the husband. This is problematic for those who have been forcibly displaced and refugees and internally displaced people are disproportionately female. “If a woman goes up against a man in a land dispute in front of traditional authorities, most probably the man will win,” said one Ugandan human rights organization. This leaves widows vulnerable to discrimination.
