The Bunong

06/29/2007

This pamphlet tells the story of the friendship between Refugees International and the Bunong people of Cambodia. Refugees International President Emeritus Lionel Rosenblatt became aware of the Bunong’s plight when he found members of the group going home in a UN convoy in 1999. They were among the last of 250,000 refugees returning to their homes after the wars that raved Southeast Asia in the 1970s. In order to help them maintain their unique identity, RI has promoted the Bunong’s handicraft traditions and helped them to find their own political voice. In addition, RI has helped the Bunong to integrate into the modern world; Mane Yun, a young Bunong woman, has recently become the first Bunong to receive her law degree thanks in part to RI funding and support.
