This photograph of the Aceh coastline shows the devastation caused by the December 26, 2004 tsunami. A huge wave swept as much as five miles inland killing at least 150,000 people and destroying the homes of nearly 600,000. The great majority of people in this small seaside community were killed. The survivors are living in tents while they await construction of new homes by the government or international aid agencies. Patches of green mark where vegetation is recovering from the impact of the tsunami.
