With Darfur on the brink of a humanitarian crisis, activists have urged the United States and other world powers to pressure Omar al Bashir, Sudan’s president, to reverse his decision and allow aid workers back into the country. The expulsion of aid workers followed the March 4 decision of International Criminal Court judges to order Mr al Bashir’s arrest for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Their expulsion already threatens "critical food, health, shelter and water needs for between 1.1 and 1.5 million people" in the vast, arid region, according to Joel Charny of RI.
