An American humanitarian organization warned that cutting U.S. development assistance to Pakistan would be “counterproductive” especially as millions of survivors of last year’s flooding are still struggling to recover.
According to Refugees International, the U.S. and other donor governments need to look at lasting solutions to Pakistan’s housing sector, since some 9 million people affected by last year’s floods are facing this year’s monsoon season without secure shelter.
On the other hand, the organization also praised the U.S.’s response to the 2010 floods in Pakistan to be “incredibly effective” compared with other recent disasters such as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
