Over 400 friends and supporters attended Refugees International's 28th Anniversary Dinner, to honor Sir Mark and Lady Malloch Brown with the 2007 McCall-Pierpaoli Humanitarian Award. His Excellency the Ambassador of Italy and Mrs. Giovanni Castellaneta hosted the event at the Embassy of Italy, on May 3, 2007. It was a record-breaking evening, netting over $600,000 to support our lifesaving advocacy.
Sir Mark has since been appointed by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to serve as Foreign Minister for Africa, Asia and the United Nations, and was granted a peerage in the House of Lords.
Law and Order star Sam Waterston was the Master of Ceremonies, and luminaries from the worlds of philanthropy, business, politics and society attended, including Canadian Ambassador Michael Wilson, former US Ambassadors Morton Abramowitz, Elizabeth Bagley, and Betty King, RI Board Emeritus Chair James V. Kimsey, and Benefit Committee Co-Chairs Sydney McNiff Ferguson, Eileen Shields-West and Julia Taft.
The McCall-Pierpaoli Humanitarian Award honors those who have shown extraordinary service to refugees and displaced people. The award was instituted in memory of three people – David and Penny McCall and Yvette Pierpaoli who died during a Refugees International mission to Albania in 1999. Past recipients include Kofi and Nane Annan, Ambassador John Danforth and Julia Taft.
